Welcome to the Newman Center!
We are proud to announce that Fr. Chris Luoni will be joining us as Chaplain this year. Fr. Chris serves full-time as the Vocations Director for the Diocese and will be helping us with our Sunday evening liturgies, confessions, retreats and many other ways, as well as be a regular presence with our students, faculty & staff during the academic year.
Why are we the “Newman” Center? Named in honor of Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman, the Newman Centers are residence and Catholic ministry centers throughout the world. The centers provide pastoral services and ministries to their Catholic communities, in particular to the Roman Catholic population in higher education. Each center differs in the set-up and what is offered, but most trace their inspiration back to the Newman Society of Oxford University, which was founded as the Catholic Club in 1878. It was not until 1888 that the club was renamed the Newman Society as a tribute to John Henry Cardinal Newman, who had done a vast amount to advance the cause of Catholicism at Oxford, both as an Anglican striving to recover Anglicanism’s Catholic roots, and subsequently as a convert to Catholicism. Cardinal Newman was beatified on September 19, 2010.

Our Newman Center is the home of the Catholic Campus Ministry at Youngstown State University. We have a beautiful building, located on the northern edge of campus, right across Madison Avenue from the two newest Residence Halls, Cafaro House and Lyden House and just down the road from the new The Flats at Wick. Our Catholic Student Association operates out of our building and holds monthly meetings and activities throughout the school year.
